Tire & wheel fitting: how a tire and rim become one
Mounting, balancing and torque — the three steps that turn a tire and a rim into a wheel that runs smooth, straight and safe. What good fitting looks like.
Buying the right tire is half the story. The other half happens in the bay, where a tire and a bare rim are joined, spun true and torqued down. Done well it's invisible — the car simply feels planted. Done badly it shows up as vibration, uneven wear, or a wheel that works loose. Here's what the three steps actually do.
1 · Mounting
- Dismount and inspect
The old tire comes off and the rim is checked for cracks, bends and corrosion on the bead seat. A clean, true rim is what lets a new tire seal.
- Lubricate and seat the bead
Bead paste lets the tire slip over the rim without tearing, then a burst of air pops both beads onto their seats with a distinct snap. New valve stems go in while the tire is off.
- Set pressure
The tire is inflated to the door-placard figure — not the sidewall maximum — ready to go back on the car.
2 · Balancing
No tire-and-rim assembly is perfectly even in weight. The balancer spins it at speed, finds the heavy spot, and tells the fitter exactly where and how much counterweight to add to the rim. Cancel that imbalance and the wheel can spin at highway speed without the tremor you feel as a shaking steering wheel.
3 · Torque, not muscle
The final step is the one most often rushed. Wheels must be tightened in a star pattern — opposite to opposite — so they pull down square against the hub, and to a specific torque with a calibrated wrench. An impact gun alone over-tightens, which warps brake discs and can stretch studs; under-tightening lets a wheel work loose. Both are dangerous.

What's included with us
Mounting and balancing are included on every tire and wheel package we sell. We seat new valves, balance each wheel, torque to spec in a star pattern, and tell you when to come back for a free re-torque. You buy a tire; you drive away on a finished wheel.
Find tires or wheels that fit your car — mounting and balancing are always included.
